The film had a very good opening with 100% occupancy in theatres especially in Delhi, Mumbai, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh and Hyderabadowing to release on a national holiday on the eve of Independence Day.[Due to the limited availability of screens (approximately 1000), Balaji Motion Pictures negotiated with the makers of Chennai Express to free up 1000 more screens on Friday to accommodate 2700 screens for Once Upon a Time in Mumbai Dobaara!. Despite a low number of screens, the film went on to earn
90 million(US$1.4 million) nett on its opening day. However, due to heated competition with Chennai Express, the film only managed to collect
366.40 million (US$5.8 million) over its extended four-day weekend, which was considered a poor figure. Earnings dropped on Monday, collecting
40 million (US$640,000).The film managed to show growth on Tuesday and Wednesday due to Raksha Bandhan, collecting
85 million (US$1.4 million) on both days.The film collected
510.90 million (US$8.1 million) on its extended first week. On its second weekend, however, the film witnessed a huge drop of nearly 90%, collecting only
45 million (US$720,000) and bringing up its total to
555 million (US$8.8 million). The film collected
70 million (US$1.1 million) over its second week, bringing up its total to
580 million (US$9.2 million). Despite this, it was officially declared a "Flop" by Box Office India. The film also did not perform well at overseas, collecting only $1.55 million on its first weekend
